Things to be concerned about are: 1) You must take care of the system, they require yearly maintenance (mine needs 3-8 hours each year). 2) You will usually be cutting holes through your roof, this adds a bit of risk and, as with #1 can require more maintenance. 3) Hail, you will now have a large sheet of glass (or two) on your roof, don’t forget to check you insurance and upgrade it if the collectors are not currently covered in your policy.

you have to do your homework on this. not all hardwood floor is usable with radiant heat. you have to make sure it is before you buy it.usually with radiant heat they bury it in the concrete. there is an electric heat grid that can be put over concrete but again you have to check if it is compatible with the type of flooring you are planning for. good luck

In PEX tubing, an oxygen barrier must be used if there are ferrous components in a radiant heating system. If an oxygen barrier is not used in these systems, the ferrous components will rust.
Hydronic radiant heating systems with PEX tubing are reliable and easier to maintain. In order to take full advantage of what radiant heating has to offer, the system should be comprised of a boiler or hot water heater, manifolds, pumps, thermostat, PEX tubing, and either gypcrete or wood panels. Hydronic systems can be installed under any flooring type, though sometimes the height of the floors needs to be adjusted. With some recent inventions, the process has become much easier; as such products are lightweight and allow the tubes to be fitted into pre-cut wood panels.

I'm interested in this as a contribution to global warming. I heard several commentators refer to this as problem in passing, but can not find sources on the scale of the problem. I am also interested in the impact energy production from sources that create heat of combustion, such as nuclear and biofuels and geothermal energy which has published many heat time.
I am planning to switch from steam to water heating in my house. My plumber recommends using PEX Piping and tank-less water heating systems. Anyone had any experience with PEX piping for house heat? I know PEX piping is generally used for Radiant Floor Heating. Anyone knows why it can or cannot be used to provide hot water supply to radiators at home.

Using Solar Power to heat your water is one of the most practical and cost effective ways to harness energy from the sun. Solar Thermal Systems absorb the sun’s heat and use it to heat your residence’s own hot water needs. In general, the solar thermal system will easily heat water to 140ºF or higher matching the range of its traditional hot water tank counterpart. Effective systems can collect up to 70 percent of the sun’s energy that reaches them and transfer it to you.
In general there are two types of active water heating systems: direct and indirect.
Direct Solar Water Heating
As implied, direct systems capture the sun’s heat in collectors to directly heat a household’s water supply. The system consists of collector pipes filled with water that are linked to an insulated Storage Tank usually located inside a home. As the sun heats the water inside the pipes, the water flows into the storage tank. Although direct systems are more efficient that indirect ones, they require more maintenance to keep the pipes clear of mineral deposits. Direct solar thermal systems also work best in warmer climates where the system is less prone to freezing.
Indirect Solar Water Heating
Indirect systems do not heat the water directly rather they use fluid with a low-freezing point to absorb radiant energy from the sun. Also termed closed-loop systems, an indirect solar water heating system absorbs the sun’s rays into heat pipes evacuated of air which in turn heats up the pipe’s thin copper laminate located on the back of each pipe. The collection array consists of multiple heating pipes that are mounted and tilted to maximize solar collection.
Often glycol (an ingredient in antifreeze) runs through adjacent pipes within the array and heats up via contact with the copper laminate. As the temperature in the pipes rise, the heat activates a pump that circulates the glycol fluid through a heat exchange coil in the water tank. That coil, in turn, transfers its heat to the water tank and voila, hot water is produced.
Solar Pool and Hot Tub Heating Systems
Solar pool heating systems work on a similar principle to a direct system Solar Hot Water Heater. However, because the water can heat up too much in a solar thermal system, the collector’s glazing is often removed. Using non-glazed pipes or a heating system that resembles a flat black mat prevents the pool water from becoming super-heated as well as reduces costs to the overall system.
While solar pool and hot tub heating systems often are exempted from federal and state monetary incentives and rebates, they often pay for themselves within 1–5 years (depending mostly on where you live).
Radiant Heating Systems For Your Home
You can also use a solar hot water (or thermal) system to heat your home. Rather than transferring the heated water to a domestic hot water heater, the solar hot water system can connect to a radiant floor and/or wall panel radiator.
You can make the collection and distribution system as simple or complicated as you like depending on your location, climate, and intended use. Most radiant heating systems use the collection array to heat water and store it in a large thermal collection tank so that you have enough heat to last at least throughout the night. A general rule of thumb is to have a collection tank that can store 1½ to 2 gallons of water for every square foot of solar collector. That water, in turn, is piped via plastic tubing under floors to create an effective heating system.
Radiant Floor Heating systems have many advantages. They are typically 40 percent more efficient than a forced air heating system and can be zoned so that each room has its own thermostat. Furthermore, radiant floors distribute heat beneath your feet where it naturally rises providing a cozy and evenly distributed heated living space.

In cooler climates during the colder times of the year, an indirect solar hot water system can help lower your energy costs by working as a water preheating system rather than an outright water heater. Preheated water reduces the load on your other energy systems to heat the water.
Another trick to increase the system’s efficiency is to wrap your water tank with an insulation blanket to keep the water sufficiently warm and further minimize the need to rely on traditional power sources to heat your water. (Note that not all water heaters need an insulation blanket. Many of the newer energy-efficient models come with a thicker layer of insulation inside the tank that eliminates the need for additional insulation).
Where to Place a Solar Thermal Collection System
Like other types of Solar Energy systems, solar hot water heating systems work best on south-facing walls with full sun exposure. Because of the collector tubes’ type of construction, the outside elements have less effect on its performance compared to a Photovoltaic collection system; a bit of shade on the thermal array will have a less noticeable impact.

Which is more efficient: electric or solar heating?
I recently did an experiment on this. According to my model, solar panel heating is more efficient. Is this the results that should happen? Why is it more efficient (just a brief little explanation if possible)?
Don’t confuse “green” or cost with engineering efficiency. The efficiency should be calculated as the amount of energy converted into temperature increase of the air or the water (total mass of, say, water times the specific heat of the water time the delta T) divided by the amount of heat put in. If your experiment uses the same mass of water for the solar heater and for electric heater, then heat gained is directly proportional to the delta T (higher delta T = higher efficiency). Then the hard part is figuring out how much heat was put in. With the electric heater, this is straight forward, just calculate Kw-hours or joules. For the solar heating, it is a little more difficult to measure how much heat went in. I would guess that Electric could be more efficient because, with a good design, virtually all the electric power could be converted directly into heating water (with some heat going into the container and some going into radiation heat loss). With solar, there may be more heat going into the container and maybe more radiant heat loss. On the “green” side, the sunlight is free.
Pex Tubing Tube WHAT IS THE SPACING FOR RADIANT FLOOR TUBING?
What is the required spacing between pex tubing in a slab of concrete for optimum performance of a Radiant Floor Heating system?
I did this in the mountains of Colorado using 12 inch spacing and had good results without a heat calculation. The spacing is not ‘required’ but recommended depending upon manufacturer. Most do 12 inch since the wire mesh that you attach the pipes to have 6 inch spacings. The ‘runs’ should be no more than 300 feet long and try to get them as even as possible. The shorter the runs the more even temperature the slab will be when it operating. If you can plan your areas to have a ‘hot’ run next to a ‘cooler’ run of pipe that is best. Like making a big spiral with the pipes 2 feet on center and then halfway reversing and going back the other way so you maintain the spacing but have that hot, cool, hot, cool runs of pipe. This is done because the pipe is transferring heat as it circulates and towards the end of the run can be noticeably cooler. Therefore a floor that is more evenly heated. Always have a closed cell insulation under the pipes. It will still work but it is quite a bit more expensive to run. Hope this helps. By the way this is a great heating method.

What in the World is Pex and Why Would I Use It?

In my last article about my tankless water heater I made several references to as to using PEX. Since I figure not a lot of people understand or even know what PEX is I thought I’d devote this article to a little education for the DIY weekend warrior that may be considering changing over his water heater, but, may not want to get involved with copper and soldering and flux, etc. DIYers, it’s time to look like a hero, again!
What the heck is PEX?
Lets start with a little background about PEX. Here’s some info from Wikipedia:
“Cross-linked polyethylene, commonly abbreviated PEX or XLPE, is a form of polyethylene with cross-links. It is formed into tubing, and is used predominantly in hydronic radiant heating systems, domestic water piping and insulation for high tension electrical cables. It is also used for Natural Gas and offshore oil applications, chemical transportation, and transportation of sewage and slurries. Recently, it has become a viable alternative to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) or copper pipe for use as residential water pipes. PEX tubing ranges in size from 1/4-inch to 4-inch, but 1/2-inch, 3/4-inch, and 1-inch are by far the most widely used.”
Ok, so we’re not talking about using it for natural gas or offshore drilling, but, we are interested in using it as domestic piping, maybe even for radiant heating, hmmm? Why would we want to use PEX? Here are some of the benefits:
PEX can be used for hot or cold water AND it has fittings to make it adaptable to copper and PVC.
PEX is incredibly FLEXIBLE! This is one of it’s shining properties for us “less talented” DIYer’s. I don’t know how to sweat a copper elbow and really don’t care to learn. But, PEX can be bent into a radius (for example, 3/8″ pipe may be bent to a 4″ radius and 1/2″ pipe to a 5″ radius). Huh, no sweat. (Get it?)
Since less fittings are required there are less points at which a leak can happen. Smart, no? Obviously, the more fittings the more potential “problem” areas. Take out the fittings, take out the leaks.
PEX is also less likely to burst. It’s flexibility also gives it the ability to expand and contract.
If, for some reason you need to repair it, there are easy to use kits that you can purchase.
PEX has all the typical fittings as well, like shutoffs, elbows, etc
Making the Connection
PEX general has two methods for installing it. One is compression (too much work) and the other is insertion (yup, much easier). You don’t even have to use that stinky glue and cleaner like you do for PVC! This is living large.
You’ll find that it comes in rolls, typically 100ft., or in lengths that are generally 10ft. long. If you desire you can get it in red (for the hot water) and blue (for, duh, the cold water) or you can stick with plain old white and mark them yourself.
PEX is generally recommended for interior or buried projects, but, I would check with either the manufacturer or your plumbing supply house for any exterior ideas you may have. PEX piping is freeze damage resistant and can expand and contract as water freezes and thaws within the tubing. No tubing material is freeze-break proof, however, and PEX should be installed using the same locally-prescribed insulation requirements to prevent freezing of any plumbing system.
PEX is the snaps!
One of the best reasons I enjoy using it is the ability to “snap and go”. Just measure your length of pipe, snap it into any connector you using and “go” on down the line. I would also recommend laying it out in a dry run first to determine what types of connectors you may need, if any.

Swimming Pool Heat Pumps – A Great Way to Heat Your Pool
It’s a fact – most swimming pools are never at optimal swimming temperatures, and while much of the time the cold shock of the water can be an exciting part of the fun, it’s also great to have the option to warm things up a little. This is where swimming pool heat pumps come in – they’re an opportunity to invest in your home while adding to the fun of family memories, as the kids will never want to leave the healthy fun of the water behind.
There are a number of ways to heat a pool, including the use of swimming pool heat pumps, gas or Solar Panels. Swimming pool heat pumps don’t generate heat. Instead they use electricity to capture heat and move it from one location to another. As the swimming pool’s water is circulated by the pump, it is passed through a filter into which a heat pump is incorporated. The heat pump’s fan draws outside air in, directing it over an evaporator coil containing a liquid refrigerant agent. This agent absorbs the air, becoming a warm gas that then passes through a compressor, becoming hotter as its particles are pushed more closely together.
Passing then through a condenser, which transfers the gas’s heat to the cooler water coming from the other end of the heater device, the gas returns to liquid, and goes back to the evaporator to repeat the cycle. The water returns to the pool, dispersing through it and adding to the pool’s overall warmth.
What this means is that swimming pool heat pumps work better than other kinds of inground heaters for pools, like the kinds that require solar panels. This is because, while they might initially cost a bit more than other heating solutions, their cost is less when seen in the long term because they are less effected by things like weather changes and the absence of sunlight. They’re also likely to last a lot longer than such solutions, as they’ve been refined in their design over many years, while most other in ground pool heaters are in their technological infancy.
The biggest concern when installing swimming pool heat pumps is whether the job’s being done by a qualified professional – obviously any device involving gas and heat coils is not one you want poorly installed, especially if you have kids running around. Also, proper installation can optimize the functionality of the pump.
After this concern, you need to consider whether, regardless of the initial price of installation, you can afford to have a swimming pool heat pump running and eating up electricity. As efficiently as it may operate, if your kids are left unchecked running the heater they could well rack up phenomenal bills unless you establish some way to regiment the amount of power the device uses. Place the wooden frame on top of the foil. 5. Screw the rubber mat onto the wooden frame. 6. Lay the heat exchanger inside the frame. 7. Lay the piece of glass on top of the frame sandwiching the heat exchanger inside. 8. Caulk the glass to secure it to the frame. 9. Connect the heat exchanger inlet to the cold water source. 10. Connect the heat exchanger outlet to the hot water source. 11. Position the solar collector at a slight angle to the direct sunlight 12. Turn on the cold water. 13. As the heat in the heat exchanger rises, water from the heat exchanger outlet willrise as well.
The supply of hot water from smaller solar collectors is usually enough to supply a shower or the needs of a small bathroom. Areas with greater demand such as kitchens and laundry rooms will require that you make solar power collectors that are larger. Use caution when working at the collector’s output end. Water temperature can be as high as 110 degrees Farenheidt – scalding hot!

camper conversion?
We’ve just bought a Renault T35 (old ambulance) for converting into a cheap and cheerful camper. The shower is going to be one of those solar showers that don’t need a pump or electricity. The toilet a portaloo. I’m considering adapting another solar shower to run the tap in the kitchen sink. But I still need electricity to power a small fridge and cooker/hob.
Is a leisure battery what I need?
How do I install it (Or other device)?
Will it charge from the alternator when the van is running?

You need a deep cycle battery and probably a higher output alternator. Get a kit that will have the parts and instructions on how to charge from van when hooked up and engine is running. Check with camper/van stores or auto supply stores for the kit you need.

Does anyone know of a company in the St. Louis area that services Solar Heating Panels?
I bought a house that has solar heating panels on the roof but are currently not hooked up and was looking for someone to come look at them and see if the are in working condition and hook them back up.
Solar water heating systems use Solar Panels, called collectors, which for maximum efficiency are fitted on the roof of the house, in case of an apartment the side which receives the most sunlight. The basic function of solar water heating panels is to collect and store the heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water tank.
Solar water heating panels use free heat from the sun to warm domestic hot water; it is not used in heavy industries as it is unable to provide the required quantity. A conventional boiler, immersion heater, or geyser may be used to make the water even hotter, or to provide hot water when Solar Energy is unavailable. Adding a heater is totally up to the discretion of the home owner; you may or may not find it necessary.
There are two types of solar water heating panels; they are evacuated tubes and flat plate collectors. Flat plate’s collectors can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof. Both evacuated tubes as well as most flat plate collectors have a life expectancy of over 20 years, thus making them an good long term investment.
Solar water heating panels need around 5 square meters of roof and receive direct sunlight for the main part of the day. However, if you do not have a south facing roof and if you have enough space, you could install two panels, one facing east and one facing west – but this will make installation process more expensive and certainly more tedious. The solar panels don’t always have to be mounted on a roof; they can be fixed to a frame on any flat area that receives direct sunlight too.
