Testing A Fuel Pump

Fuel pumps in fuel injected vehicles are mounted inside the gas tank. It’s a major job to replace it and these pumps are expensive. So before you replace one, you better do your homework. I’ve seen too many DIY mechanics make the assumption that their engine running problems are due to a bad pump. Several hundred dollars later, they still have the same problem.

If your diagnostics lead you to believe you have a fuel pump problem, here’s the proper way to check out the pump. First, perform a fuel pressure test. You’ll need a fuel pressure gauge and the adapters to fit your vehicle. Some auto parts stores rent this test gear. You’ll also need the specs for your vehicle. Check out a printed or online shop manual for those.

Perform the fuel pressure check first thing in the morning, with the engine cool. A cool engine provides two things: better working conditions with less chance of a fuel-spill related fire, and a more accurate reading of residual fuel pressure after sitting for a long time. Fuel pumps have a check valve that prevents the fuel from draining back into the tank when the engine is shut off. If the valve isn’t working properly, you’ll have fuel drain back and that causes hard starting first thing in the morning. Shop manuals have a specific procedure for performing this “leakdown” test if the vehicle is brought in warm with high fuel pressure. Usually, the tech looks for pressure to stay within 5 lbs of the running pressure.

If your fuel pressure and leakdown readings are within spec, you’ll need to check fuel delivery volume. Yup, that’s an important test especially if your performance problems occur at high speeds or heavy throttle. Some manufacturers list a volume of fuel for a specified period of time. If you can’t find a spec, use this rule of thumb-a fuel pump should deliver 1 quart of fuel in 30 seconds. If yours passes that test, move on to the electrical tests.

The electrical test can spot a fuel pump problem that evades all other diagnostics. Remember, the pump is always pumping against resistance (the pressure regulator and he fuel injectors). Just like any other electric motor that meets resistance, it uses more power. So like an EKG at your doctor’s office, measuring current draw at different throttle openings tells you how the pump is performing. A properly operating fuel pump should draw from 3 to 6.5 amps.

If you own a scope, you can get even better readings. A scope will tell you if you have a bad winding in the pump since it detects every lobe on the armature.

can you run ethonal in car with a HHO Hydrogen Generator to improve mileage?

What Does a Fuel Pressure Regulator Do to Your Car

When you need more power in your car, you are requiring a boost in air and fuel in the engine. Most fuel-ran cars have fuel pumps. Depending on the volume of fuel injected you get the power you like ? but you will have wasted so much money on it too, since fuel isn?t at all very cheap these days.

Performance fuel regulators are gadgets that are placed between the tank and just before the injectors. These help regulate the flow of fuel and ensures that there is consistent pressure to control the gas being led to the injectors. The unit of measurement used for the pressure being regulated is pond per square inch or PSI.

Fuel pressure regulators come in different shapes and sizes but there is only one use for them ? to maintain the pressure above the intake manifold. This ensures that there is an optimum level of fuel being injected to the system. The excess fuel is restricted and returned to the tank, thus saving them for the next cycle.

This piece of equipment can be found where the fuel rail is. This fuel rail is the pipe, which holds the fuel for distribution to the injectors and cold start valve. This gadget is the last stop for the fuel as it gets pumped into the engine compartment. It is often cylindrical in shape and is made of metal.

The main job of the fuel regulator is as it name implies, to regulate the pressure in the fuel system to a standard constant of 28 psi. This varies depending on the car make. To accomplish this task, the gadget employs a diaphragm, which controls the valve. Excessive pressure in the line will open this valve up and release the fuel but will push back excess gas to the tank.

The regulator?s vacuum also helps decrease emissions as the car halts. When deceleration occurs, the vacuum opens the valve where the fuel is returned to reduce the pressure in the system. This helps prevent excessive production of hydrocarbon since there is less fuel being injected due to the low pressure.

There is a need to install a fuel pressure regulator in order to adjust fuel pressure according to any modifications you might have already done with your engine. These regulators are necessary if you have installed high flow aftermarket fuel pumps in your car.

Some adjustable fuel regulators are especially useful since it provides an automatic self-adjusting regulator and emissions controller in one. These gadgets are often very reliable.

There is an offshoot of this regulator system, which is called the Fuel Management Unit (FMU). It serves as a supplemental upgrade to the fuel system, which could increase both air and fuel flow to your car?s engine. The FMU is an adjustable or variable fuel pressure regulator that automatically gives a boost to your system. What it does it that it restricts the flow of fuel that goes back to the tank. When flow is restricted, pressure builds up. This increase in pressure will deliver more fuel with the same amount of time it takes for an ordinary fuel regulator.
