This means that the power company buys back any excess electricity that you are generating.   In effect, the meter runs both ways.   The net-metering laws are different depending on where you live, so you should check them out before making a decision about a wind turbine or solar panels or both.  For example, Massachusetts just enacted a new net metering law that looks particularly attractive - the utility company has to buy back your excess electricity at retail rates rather than wholesale rates.
