Wind Power Turbines

Wind Power–The Best Green Energy Source

Electricity produced by Wind Turbines is Green Power in that it causes no environmental pollution. No greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change are produced either. Wind Power Generation can be on a large scale, which is the case with most commercial projects,or on a small scale as with home owner turbines.

Wind is the cheapest form of renewable energy without a doubt. Solar Energy is also clean, green, power but is more expensive and limited in output. Solar Panels are presently expensive in relation to the power they can produce. Nuclear energy supplies a lot of the power requirements in some countries, notably in Europe.
There is however much public opposition to building new nuclear power plants.

In the USA Natural Gas is the biggest form of new energy production. Wind power is the next in line. In 2008 wind turbines will produce about 1% of the United States power needs. Around 30% of new energy production installed in 2007 was wind power.

Many consumers now realise that green energy must be our highest priority in future,if we are to minimise climate change and it effects. The trend to building fossil fuel powered generating stations must be reversed.

Home owners and farmers can help with the transition to clean power by installing Small Wind Turbines to supply all or part of their electricity needs. These turbines can be purchased from a number of manufacturers and can be installed as a rooftop Wind Turbine or on a small free standing tower.

Commercial Wind Turbines are quite expensive in relation to power output. A better solution for many is to build their own low cost wind turbine. A good turbine can be built from auto parts and a few odds and ends at very low cost. Plans and instructions are available for this project.

Any excess power production can be sold to the power utility in many areas thus reducing the cost even further. Power can also be stored in batteries for use when the wind is too light. Even a light breeze will however produce power.

The average home owner can easily build a Small Wind Turbine or several of them to supply part or all of the power required. All that is needed is simple tools and some auto parts and wood. Several can be built for the cost of one Commercial Wind Turbine.

Not a bad business also for anyone who wants to make them for resale. The demand for a low cost turbine is there and can only grow in years ahead.

Why not build your own Wind Power Turbine now and produce your own free green electricity. You will be doing mother earth a favor by reducing atmospheric pollution. This is an idea whose time has come.

How do we make Wind Turbine Power generators safer for birds?

A big concern surrounding wind energy is the safety of birds. Is there a current model that eliminates this problem? If so, is there a version of that model for home use?

Not sure whether any “Wind-Farmer” thought of this, but at airports we use strong loudspeakers that emit raptor calls.

The Honeywell WT600 Wind Turbine will go on general sale in the USA from October 2009, the unit will be for sale in Ace Hardware stores throughout the U.S & the turbine is specifically designed for individual homes, but will it fair better than the best models on the market today such as the skystream 3.7

The Honeywell wind turbine is a new concept and looks to be aimed at mass marketing with ease of purchase and installation, the unit is only 95lb in weight so it can be mounted on the roof, a poleor even the chimney if you have one.

Cost will be around $4500 to buy and around the $1500 mark on top to be fully fitted so some math will be needed to figure out how long it will take to break even and start saving on your fuel bills.

Up until now Turbines have converted the energy from the blades via a gearbox and shaft losing some of the power on the way but the Honeywell runs on small magnets fitted to the very tips of the fan and it is in the outer shell where the produced energy is captured

As you can see the new design is far from what we are used to seeing and should be quieter and smoother running due to the magnets as opposed to mechanical action. The sound transmitted is rated at 35-45 decibels.

The Honeywell Wind Turbine can also operate at much reduced wind speeds, as low as 2 mph  and up to 45 mph, anything above 45mph and the unit will turn sideways to avoid getting damaged.

The generator is said to be able to produce 2,000 Kilowatt- hours per year in a class 4 wind, which amounts to approx 17% of the output for the average U.S house, so time to read the meter and see if it is worth it,

Building a Wind Turbine  is a great cheap option to getting you started on the road to utility bill freedom, but some of you may not have the time or resources to build your own so we are also going to review different types of off the shelf Wind Turbines.

The Skystream 3.7

The Skystream 3.7 is a popular model and is a great choice for home or small business, but lets get straight to the point, how much does it cost?.well this can only be used as a rough guide as individual circumstances differ but $14000-$18000 should be around the installed figure, and you can get a 30% reduction in the USA through the Small Wind tax credit system, this only comes into play if you are paying tax as the 30% is subtracted from your tax bill.

As sustainable energy gathers pace I envisage many more countries following suit with tax breaks so it is worth checking wherever you live,

The Skystream 3.7 works in conjunction with your utility power so if you have a lull in the wind the electricity for your home will be supplied from the grid, however the good part is the wind does not have to be very strong to benefit as the estimated energy output is 400 KWh per month at a wind speed of around 12mph or 5.4 m/s, you can check your monthly usage by taking a reading from your meter and then again one month later then calculate the difference or check your utility bill. if you generate more electricity than you are using then your meter could go into reverse which sounds good to me.

The Skystream 3.7 Domestic Wind Turbine has a rated capacity of 2.4 kw and the blades are 12 ft or 3.7 m, the operational rpm is 50-330 and towers are available from 30-70 feet,

The positioning of The Wind Turbine is crucial for optimum performance, you can survey the site using an anemometer but a guide to start with is to look at Wind Guide USA or Wind Guide International,

The height of the tower to mount your Skystream 3.7 will also be governed by your sites circumstances and a good guide is the lower part of your rotor blade should be 20 feet or 6 meters  above any surrounding buildings or trees that are within a 250 feet ( 76m) radius of the wind turbine.

lets look at a Skystream 3.7 in action
