Honeywell WT600 Review

The Honeywell WT600 Wind Turbine will go on general sale in the USA from October 2009, the unit will be for sale in Ace Hardware stores throughout the U.S & the turbine is specifically designed for individual homes, but will it fair better than the best models on the market today such as the skystream 3.7

The Honeywell wind turbine is a new concept and looks to be aimed at mass marketing with ease of purchase and installation, the unit is only 95lb in weight so it can be mounted on the roof, a poleor even the chimney if you have one.

Cost will be around $4500 to buy and around the $1500 mark on top to be fully fitted so some math will be needed to figure out how long it will take to break even and start saving on your fuel bills.

Up until now turbines have converted the energy from the blades via a gearbox and shaft losing some of the power on the way but the Honeywell runs on small magnets fitted to the very tips of the fan and it is in the outer shell where the produced energy is captured

As you can see the new design is far from what we are used to seeing and should be quieter and smoother running due to the magnets as opposed to mechanical action. The sound transmitted is rated at 35-45 decibels.

The Honeywell Wind Turbine can also operate at much reduced wind speeds, as low as 2 mph  and up to 45 mph, anything above 45mph and the unit will turn sideways to avoid getting damaged.

The generator is said to be able to produce 2,000 Kilowatt- hours per year in a class 4 wind, which amounts to approx 17% of the output for the average U.S house, so time to read the meter and see if it is worth it,

Skystream 3.7 Review

Building a wind turbine  is a great cheap option to getting you started on the road to utility bill freedom, but some of you may not have the time or resources to build your own so we are also going to review different types of off the shelf wind turbines.

The Skystream 3.7

The Skystream 3.7 is a popular model and is a great choice for home or small business, but lets get straight to the point, how much does it cost?.well this can only be used as a rough guide as individual circumstances differ but $14000-$18000 should be around the installed figure, and you can get a 30% reduction in the USA through the small wind tax credit system, this only comes into play if you are paying tax as the 30% is subtracted from your tax bill.

As sustainable energy gathers pace I envisage many more countries following suit with tax breaks so it is worth checking wherever you live,

The Skystream 3.7 works in conjunction with your utility power so if you have a lull in the wind the electricity for your home will be supplied from the grid, however the good part is the wind does not have to be very strong to benefit as the estimated energy output is 400 KWh per month at a wind speed of around 12mph or 5.4 m/s, you can check your monthly usage by taking a reading from your meter and then again one month later then calculate the difference or check your utility bill. if you generate more electricity than you are using then your meter could go into reverse which sounds good to me.

The Skystream 3.7 domestic wind turbine has a rated capacity of 2.4 kw and the blades are 12 ft or 3.7 m, the operational rpm is 50-330 and towers are available from 30-70 feet,

The positioning of the wind turbine is crucial for optimum performance, you can survey the site using an anemometer but a guide to start with is to look at Wind Guide USA or Wind Guide International,

The height of the tower to mount your Skystream 3.7 will also be governed by your sites circumstances and a good guide is the lower part of your rotor blade should be 20 feet or 6 meters  above any surrounding buildings or trees that are within a 250 feet ( 76m) radius of the wind turbine.

lets look at a Skystream 3.7 in action
