Residential Solar Power – Solar Power For Homes

We have all felt the impact of rising fuel and energy costs, we have also all seen the devastating impact on the environment the extraction and use of fossil fuels has. For quite a few years now solar power for homes has been a much promoted alternative, the only problem is that it is so expensive to purchase and have installed, that is until now…

Residential solar power for homes has become a must if we are to free ourselves of the rising cost of traditional power resources such as fossil fuels. Solar power for homes has been with us for some time now, unfortunately the costs of taking it up have been prohibitive.

Residential solar power for homes is the simplest Alternative Energy installation we can preform on our homes. Easy to install and maintain (Solar Panels have a life span of around 30years) a residential Solar Power System will have you saving money for years to come.

No longer do you have to have massive, ugly solar panels decorating your roof, the panels produced today come in a variety of shapes and sizes (depending on your energy needs) and are made to blend in with the design of your home.

Possibly the most attractive feature of solar power for homes is it gives you the freedom to live your life independently or at least be less dependent upon, the power grid. This independence not only allows you to have what is effectively a free energy source, it also means you are not harming the environment as Solar Energy is a clean (no emissions, non polluting) and renewable energy source. The fact that residential solar power provides us with a clean, renewable energy, gives us the luxury to be less conscientious of and more liberal with our energy usage in the home.

Regardless of whether you are looking to totally power your home with solar or are looking to supplement traditional power sources to give you a cheaper, more reliable (no more power outages), unrestricted power resource, Solar Power Is the way to go.

Recently we have seen the emergence of an affordable way to get a residential solar power system up and running. Many households are turning to DIY (Do It Yourself) solar power projects. Diy Solar power guides are available on the internet via instant download and contain all the information (via video and ebook) you will need to get a Solar Power For The Home system built and installed in no time.

Is it in demand to be an Solar Panels installer at Canada?

I’m studying at this “green job”…. and I was wondering if It’s on demand this job in Canada? (to Install Solar Panels)

THANKS IN ADVANCED :) greetings from Europe..

Sorry but not in Canada. While the vast majority of Canadians live close to the 45th parallel, we still don’t get a lot of sunshine during the winter months.

Still, continue your studies because there may very well be a need for qualified technicians like you. However, not in Canada at least, not at this point in time.

Experimenters of Past Create Hydrogen Powered Cars

A few other Europeans are known to have made hydrogen from water by adding acids and metals, but Henry Cavendish, a meticulous British scientist, went further because he had what many of us wish we had enough money to do nothing but experiments. He took advantage of his fortunate financial circumstances for the

Advancement of scientific learning, and he made excellent notes of his discoveries. For men, women are a distraction. Henry was so enthralled with science that he refused to be distracted. He wouldn’t even look!

In 1766, after repeated experiments, he isolated and described hydrogen gas (then called “inflammable air”), identifying it as a distinct element. He applied a spark to the gas, it yielded water, and at length he concluded that water is made of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. Now you know who was the first human on record to reach this conclusion about the nature of water. Travel by hydrogen filled balloons followed soon after, in 1783.

A very admirable partnership was that of Antoine Laurent and Marie Anne Lavoisier. They are deservedly called “the founders of modern chemistry.” They were a French husband and wife scientific team that did the most important experiment of the 18th century, and, interestingly, it had ,to do with identifying the makeup of water.

By proving the composition of H20, Lavoisier disproved the erroneous teaching surrounding phlogiston, which was thought to be a component of combustion. Belief in phlogiston was a mistaken notion held by the scientific community for more than half a century, and it ceased to exist when Lavoisier named the gas formerly known as “inflammable air” hydrogen, from the French hydro (water) + gene (maker). Inversely, you could say “made from water.”

The couple did a tremendous amount of good by their numerous experiments touching on diverse subjects. If they were alive today, you can be sure that they would be at the forefront of pointing to a viable alternative to polluting, expensive, disappearing fossil fuels. For instance, in 1774, they focused sunlight through a series of high powered lenses to produce enough heat to melt platinum, over 3000 degrees. An 18th century artist’s rendering of their device is shown on page 2 of this book. Do you see Lavoisier wearing sunglasses?

Heat has since been used to perform thermolysis of water. Yes, water can be broken down in its component gases simply by applying heat, and a solar collector can provide the heat necessary to do it, by using a catalyst to lower the temperature at which the reaction occurs. The sun is the most abundant source of energy available on this planet, and water is the most abundant resource.

Some Solar Powered Product Ideas

With more and more people considering the implications of global warming, it’s no wonder that we are seeing plenty of Solar Panels on people’s roofs. Most people don’t have them yet despite the fact that there has been a lot written on the subject over the last couple of decades. Because only a small percentage of homes have solar panels installed, people tend to shy away from them thinking that they will cost more money than they are worth. People also consider it a technology of the future rather than one they can implement now.

However you don’t need to just put solar panels on the roof. There are plenty of other ways that you can welcome solar power into your life and not only are you doing good for the planet, but you’re also doing good for your pocket. There are even practical reasons for buying products with solar in them. Anyway, here are a few ideas of the different products you can buy with solar power.

Everyone is familiar with the sight of a solar powered calculator. We simply don’t see it as any big deal and the thought of having a calculator without that little Solar Panel would be very strange. It’s not just calculators that can be powered by Solar Energy, other gadgets are also seeing the introduction of solar such as laptops and radios.

If you are a keen gardener, then you might be more interested in the planet than most. If you are looking for a product that combines practicality with solar energy then lawn lights are for you. These lights come attached to a stake that gets inserted into the ground. The reason they are so practical is that you don’t need to concern yourself with wiring because they are totally wireless. Because the energy comes from the sun and not mains electricity, it’s easy to see why people would buy them regardless of being eco friendly.

Some home owners also need to install an electric fence to keep animals in or out of their property. Although having an electric fence might seem cruel, they are very low voltage so the animal will get more of a fright than anything else.

If you have ever gone into your attic only to find that it’s unbearably hot, then you will want to buy an attic ventilator. There are many to choose from but if you buy one that uses a solar panel then it means there is no need for wiring.

This is really just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to solar power. There are so many uses and in some circumstances you might find that you need power but don’t have access to mains electricity. Being out in the middle of nowhere and in need of power, having a solar powered device would come in really useful. Hopefully it won’t be too long before just about every electrical device has some sort of solar panel on it.

Has anyone here ever thought about reducing Global Warming by switching to Solar Power?

Be a leader in the transition from our old electric grid to a smart, reliable, and renewable one.
Homeowners now have the opportunity for a Solar Electric System without the up-front investment.
You pay only for the electricity that is generated. What’s more, it costs the same as your electricity

Actually I was thinking about covering someone’s entire yard with solar panels (probably involves removing any trees or tall landscaping). I had been looking for a volunteer that wants to give up all of their room for my solar panels. I am glad I have heard from a volunteer. Now if we can find a few hundred million more we can have that global warming beat in this country.

Green Homemade Solar Power

Homemade Solar Power Is becoming more and more popular these days. You will not only be a convinced environmentalist by using Solar Energy to power up your home but you are actually saving hundreds each month. Any average person these days would like to cut off their electric bill and this can easily be done by installing a Solar Panel or more in your house. As long the commercial Solar Panels are way too expensive you would be better of building one all by yourself and this isn’t that hard as you may think.

It’s not that expensive anymore to go green. Most people worry too much about the cost of all the components needed to build a solar energy source, in fact it’s a lot cheaper these days since the solar parts suppliers have reduced the costs of solar cells that are nearly half of the investment. It is true that a full fledged commercial system will cost you anywhere between $1,500 – $14,000, depending on its brand/manufacturer and size there are some great news that there are thousands of people that have successfully installed solar panels in their homes that have been build from components that anyone can easily find at their local hardware stores.

The main benefit of solar power is that it’s free and abundant at same time, it will never run out. Once your system is installed there is little no maintenance needed if it has been installed and secured properly. (A Solar panel’s life ranges anywhere between 20 to 40 years) Other than that, with the use of solar energy, you are not subjected to fluctuations of the prices of oil or electricity anymore. Another great thing is that in US and Australia there are certain companies that reimburse families for the excess electricity their systems generate when they are on the grid.

Installing a Solar Power System in your home can’t be done without a solid guide that teaches you step-by-step where to get the components at the lowest cost as well as installing the system properly.

Anyone can get bits and pieces of information online but it can take ages to put them together and you might end up overwhelmed by all the information overload.

We’ve personally used Earth 4 Energy and worked perfectly.

Would it be a good idea to build ‘Solar Powered‘ desalination plants in Australia?

Since Australia has too much (solar) heat and not enough water

Since most populated areas in Au are near the coast, there is plenty of Salt Water available. These also are the higher rainfall regions anyway. For municipalities the cheaper options are domestic water tanks and recycling of sewage water by ultra filtration or reverse osmosis. Solar desalination might have a low energy cost but the capital cost is likely to be much higher than for a fossil fuelled one.

The question is the cost of the water and where it is needed. It could be used inland but that means pipelines extending hundreds of kilometres. Expensive business. Too expensive for irrigation, most likely.

More than likely an engineering possibility but a financial nightmare.

Solar Photovoltaic industry trends in the US

Report on US Solar Photovoltaic Market Analysis and Forecasts to 2013 Report ( http://www.bharatbook.com/Market-Research-Reports/Report-on-US-Solar-Photovoltaic-Market-Analysis-and-Forecasts-to-2013.html )  analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the leading Solar Photovoltaic companies in the US.

The US is the dominant Solar Pv market in the world with the remarkable growth observed during the period 2001-08. The market has grown from 168 MW in 2001 to around 1,111 MW by the end of 2008. The unprecedented growth witnessed by this market is credited to the supportive policy framework of the federal and state governments for the Solar PV technology in collaboration with high-end solar investments by major companies like First Solar, Inc., Solar World AG. The other major reason for the growth can be credited to the state of California which has accounted for 70% of the PV installations in the country. Solar PV market in California has grown rapidly due to the strong policies favoring Solar Energy initiated by the state government. California has taken up specific campaigns like “Go Solar” encouraging Solar Power in the state thereby making it the leading Solar Power Generator in the US.

The ongoing financial crisis will not make significant impact on the growth of solar PV industry in the US. The supportive economic incentive programs at federal and state level for solar PV and the extension of the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) program will boost the future development of the US solar PV and drive further investments into the sector. The extension of ITC means that the states in the US can now ramp up efforts like solar loan programs and renewable portfolio standards (RPS) in a big way. This would spark the US solar industry’s move towards more efficient panels and lower costs. In this backdrop, the annual solar PV installations in the country are expected to increase from 280 MW in 2008 to 1515 MW by 2013. The cumulative solar PV installed capacity is expected to reach 5,293 MW by 2013. However, the credit crunch in the US is likely to affect the small players in the solar market who will be finding it difficult to compete given the credit crunch. As a result, the small scale Solar Companies are expected to be swallowed by the big giants thus leading to consolidation of the US solar industry.

Policies Boosting Grid-Connectivity

The Grid-connected solar PV escalated from 31% of cumulative solar PV installations in 2001 to 61% by 2008. The key to the increase in share of on-grid capacity is mainly due to the incentives provided by the federal and state governments like the Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), Feed-in tariff, California Solar Initiative etc. The Cumulative on-Grid Solar PV accounted for 677 MW in 2008 of which the state of California alone accounts for 468 MW. The other major states with the high cumulative installed capacity are New Jersey (63MW), Nevada (27 MW), Arizona (27 MW), New York (21 MW) and Colorado (21 MW). The states of Michigan announced an ambitious plan popularly known as “45-by-20″ target. As part of this plan the state pledged to have 45% of the electricity to be generated by renewable energy by 2020. Washington State introduced a new feed-in tariff program for the development of renewable energy.

The Growth in the US Solar PV Cell Market

The Solar PV cell production in the US has seen a steady increase in volume over the last five years. The US PV cell production has grown from 100 MW in 2001 to reach over 300 MW by 2008 at a CAGR of 15%. The cell production companies in the US are focusing on the next wave of solar PV technologies. Currently, the US accounts for approximately two thirds of global thin-film production. First Solar, Inc. is the leader in terms of solar cell production with the US market share of 40% with a cell production capacity of 140 MW in 2008 followed by United Solar Ovonic, LLC (17%) with 60 MW capacity and Solar World (10%) with 35 MW capacity. Other companies like Bp Solar (the US), Evergreen Solar and Schott Solar GmbH have also made their presence felt in the US solar cell market.

The growth in cumulative installed capacity of solar PV with supportive economic incentive programs at federal and state level. This along with increase of activity in cell production signals strong growth prospects of the solar industry in the US.

How much would it cost to setup a 1 kilowatt photovoltaic system?

How much would it cost to setup a 1 kilowatt photovoltaic system?

200W panel = $1000 x 5 = $5000

plus mounting
plus a 1 kw inverter
plus DC wiring (lots of copper)
plus electrical safety disconnects

Probably $7500 -$10000 or so…before gov’t subsidies

The link below has a pretty good calculator and came up with about $9500 for a 1 kw system (might be a bit high…)

What Homeowners Need to Know About Getting Solar Panels for Their New Home

Installing a solar power for a new home requires plenty of planning. If you don’t have a solid plan in place, then it won’t work. The purpose of having solar power in a home is to help homeowners save on their energy bills.

When everything gets configured with the new home, the homeowner will determine how may solar panels they will need. There are two ways that Solar Powered panels can be selected: there are those that provide power to all of the needs of the home; the other one connects to the existing power grid.

The homeowner may or may not have to size up the power with a separate system. If they plant to connect to the power grid in their area, then sizing won’t be needed. Use what you have in your budget and do the installation accordingly.

The grid power is the supplement and starts where the Solar Power System stops. The homeowner should check to make sure that additional components can be installed later on if they want it. Also, they should also see about getting the grid tied into their area.

With The Solar Power system, there are several places where it can be installed:

- Roof

- Ground area

- Posts

If it is to be installed on the roof, the homeowner needs to make sure that the roof is strong enough to hold a Solar Panel.

These panels can be heavy. Also, the roof should face the sun for most of the day, if not all day. The more sun exposure the roof gets, the more energy your home will receive. Make sure that the roof is clear of any obstacles, including trees or buildings.

There are different providers that Make Solar panels. Homeowners can search online to see the different distributors that specialize in the sale of these panels. Or, a store such as home depot could be an option. Before a homeowner has settled on an installer, they need to get at least three quotes before they make a decision.

They should also make sure to check their references. Look out for someone that says to be something they are not. If they’re not sure about who to contact, one thing they can do is to see if any of their neighbors have solar panels. Check to see who the installers were that they used. Ask questions regarding the quality of the installation and the service.

In addition to adding solar power to a home, solar power can also be used for outside lighting and ponds or fountains. The homeowner won’t have to concern themselves with having wires strung all over the place.

The homeowner can qualify for rebates from the government if they have energy efficient appliances. This is another incentive. They can check online to get more information on this program and similar ones.

In the long run, homeowners may end up paying a lot of money for their appliances, but in the long run, will benefit from doing so for many years to come.

Build the panels yourself. It has become much easier to acquire such technology for usage at home. It used to be attainable for governments or huge companies only, but now it is available to everyone. A lot of kits are being sold in the market which will instruct you on how to build your own Solar Panel.

For some people, using solar powered generators is also a good way to help save the environment. Most of the electricity we use comes from fossil fuel. Fossil fuel is the primary source of high levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere which causes global warming. Also, fossil fuel is a non-renewable resource. It will run out in the near future. It is time that we turn to renewable sources of energy that are sustainable. It is also high time that we do our share in helping the environment. If everyone were to step in and do their part by running their homes using solar power, we can protect our planet.

In a nutshell, using solar power will enable you to help save the environment and cut your power bill down.

What Are The Consequences And Benefits Of Solar Power?

Im doing this project on solar power. i need a little help figuring out what some consequences of solar energy. i didn’t think there were any. and if you could throw in some benefits of it too that’d be great. thank you :)

Hey Hannah, let me see if I can help. If you invest properly in solar power today and take advantage of any grants and tax incentives, even if your electric rates do not go up as they are forecast too, you will get your money back over time, well within the lifetime of the equipment, and sooner if there is a rate increase in the future. There are also enviromental benefits. At one time there was an argument that a solar panel will never produce as much power as was used to manufacture it. First of all, this is not correct. The, “Embodied Energy,” in a solar panel is earned back in 2 – 6 years, depending on the type panel, where the raw materials were shipped from, and how it was installed and used in the end. Most panels are warrantied to last at least 25 years, and most last much longer than that. But the argument is not important anyway. We have been living with electricity for over a century now, so it isn’t going away anytime soon. The question is, “What is the best way to produce it?” If you build a panel, and put it along side a similar sized Natural Gas fired Turbine generator for example, which earns back its embodied energy sooner? The answer is the gas turbine never does, because once you build it, ship it and install it, you now have to feed it natural gas for the rest of its life, so it keeps on digging itself a deeper and deeper embodied energy hole that it can never crawl out of. At least the panel has a chance to get even environmentally. So manufacturing and using solar panels in the end releases less pollution into our environment.

There are also mechanical and political benefits. We all know after the oil embargo of 1973, and the gulf war what it means for our country to rely on foreign oil. Wouldn’t it be nice if we only shipped in 20% of our energy instead of 60% the next time something like that happens? Our home has been powered by the wind and sun for years now, but we still remain connected to the electric grid. Last year alone there were two power failures in our county that lasted about a half day each. In both cases, we were not aware of them because our Solar Array kept on feeding the house. It’s difficult to put a price tag on something like that. Did you know that there are over 100,000 homes and businesses in the United States alone that use some level of solar power to operate their electrical devices, that’s good news.

Beyond the mechanical, political and environmental benefits however, lies a less obvious benefit, the social benefit. Right now we pump oil out of the ground, and mine for coal. The process of getting those materials to market involves shipping, military escorts and other activities that use up a good portion of that energy as well as putting lives at risk. Jobs In Solar Power are higher tech than jobs in coal mining, oil drilling and shipping, and there are more of them. Using more solar power would require us to put more people to work, and increase our education base because the work involved requires certain skills. I would personally like to take all those people out of the coal mines, send them to school and put them to work building solar panels. Nobody would have to die again in one of those dark holes in the ground trying to find food for our hungry power plants. They could work on a factory floor where they would not be exposed to coal dust, radon and other toxins and dangers. Most of our solar and wind resources are spread pretty evenly over the middle half of our globe, so everyone has access. This puts people in Bogota on a more equal footing with people in Boca Raton by giving them access to electricity, heat and clean water, and the education to use the solar resources that provide those things. Oil, coal and natural gas is generally piled up in a few places, such as Russia and the Middle East. This gives those countries and the richer governments that rule them more horse power in bargaining for the other resources of our planet. These are the things that wars are made of.

There are other reasons, but I think you get the picture. For us, renewable energy has become something of a hobby It will probably never save us any real money, utility power in most places is really very inexpensive, but it’s a little like growing your own tomatoes. It’s usually cheaper to buy them at the grocery, but lots of people go to the work and expense to maintain a garden instead. We just grow electrons in ours. If you really want to learn more about the subject, there are some great sources to look into, I will list some below. Good luck, and take care, Rudydoo

Solar Power company

Solar Power Companies: How to Choose the Right One

It is important to choose the right type from all The Solar Power companies if you want to make the jump to solar power. It does not matter if you need it for residential or commercial use you just need to decide what company can help you the best. But how do you choose the right solar power company? In this article we will give you some “how-to” steps.

What are good and what are bad solar power companies?

The first step in our how-to is to get the right idea about what good solar power companies actually are. Well in fact it is simple, bad solar power companies will try to sell you an expensive system you don’t need, or that are simply not right for your type of home or business. They are just interested in ways to cash in. A good company would advise you a product that fits your needs and makes sure that you are getting the very best for a good price. Without this advise you could end up with something that doesn’t work for you and wastes precious resources. Good solar power companies will also give you advise about how to use your Solar Power System to your advantage.

Custom Fit in Solar Power Equipment?

Before you start looking for solar power companies you need to think about what type of solar power companies you want and need. Do you want a company that simply sells the equipment, installs the equipment and leaves or do you want a company that will design a complete system for you? This may seem expensive at first but it might also be worthwhile to look into. Specially if you need to convert your energy system completely to solar power. So before you start looking for solar power companies, you need to look at what you need.

Things To Check: Experience

It does not matter if the solar power companies is big or small, it is much more of importance that you will get good products that fit your needs. What the company needs is experience, how many systems have they installed? How long has the company been in business? What background does the company have? Solar Thermal Energy Plant

Solar Energy can be produced in a number of ways. There is the familiar Solar Panel – they are becoming increasingly common as they become more and more affordable. Solar Panels produce solar energy through the process called Photovoltaics: the rays of the Sun hit the silicon crystals in the panel thus inducing a flow of electrons. Another way to extract energy form sunlight is the solar thermal process.

Solar thermal energy is gathered by the use of parabolic mirrors. The mirrors are positioned to face the Sun, and a clear tube is placed at the focal point where a liquid flowing through the tube is heated. Next, the pipes are run through a boiler where the the steam generated spins the generators creating electricity. This step is not unlike what one might see in a traditional coal-fired plant. All in all, it is a fairly simple and low-tech process as far as the technical requirements for designing and building such a plant is concerned.

There aren’t too many of these plants around the world. One was built at the end of the 70’s in response of the oil shortage and it is located in the California desert only hours from Nevada Solar One.

This solar energy plant is located 20+ miles outside of Las Vegas in the Eldorado Valley south of Boulder City, NV. If you are driving from Vegas, take Hwy 95 south, drive through Boulder City following the signs and just a stone throw outside of town take the exit to “Searchlight.” Within a mile or two you should see the 350 acre solar energy plant on the right-hand side.

As of writing this article (June of 2007), it is not operational yet. It appears that there is still quite a bit of construction is to be done. When complete, it will generate enough power through solar energy to satisfy the needs of 60 thousand of homes. The drawback is that power generated this way is still about three times more expensive than if a coal-fired plant was used.

A major advantage of generating solar energy this way as opposed to the use of solar panels is that it is quite low-tech compared to photovoltaics. The silicon crystals needed to generate a flow of electricity when it is hit by sunlight are formed by baking the compound in an oven then allowed to slowly cool to form the crystals. It requires specialty equipment, which is quite expensive. Even with larger production volumes, solar energy through photovoltaics is quite a bit more expensive than conventional power. Solar Thermal Power faces the same problem. However the technology requirements are low, economics of scale should more easily close the gap.

what is the difference between generating energy using solar cells and solar thermal energy?

ideas?
thanks

Solar photo-voltaic is the absorption of a photon by a semiconductor which causes an electron to be emitted. The frequency of the photon that can be absorped is determined by the orbit of the outer electrons in the semiconductor hence most solar cells only absorb light energy in the infrared spectrum. Various newer solar cells are formulated with different materials to absorb more than one frequency or with an intermediate material that absorbs different frequencies and re-emits them in the desired frequency. Hence generating energy from solar cells is generating a very useful form of energy from a small portion of the sunlight energy falling on the cell. The energy generated by solar cells is in a form valuable enough to sell to the grid.

Solar thermal energy is from the tendency for materials in general to absorb energy from a wide spectrum of light and re-emit them as heat (very low frequency infrared) and using that energy as heat directly rather than trying to convert it to something else. Hence solar thermal energy generation is the generation of a not too useful form of energy from a large portion of the sunlight falling on the solar collector. Solar thermal is great if it’s only heat that you want.

If oil companies owned the sun, would we get solar power?

“The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the sun.”

Ralph Nader

If the oil companies owned the sun, the art of harvesting solar energy would be perfected and solar energy would probably be the only energy choice we have….and it would be expensive. They would have all the copyrights and it would be illegal for people to build their own.

Solar Power On The Go

In the early days of solar power there were huge installations necessary to make use of this energy source. The Solar Panels that were needed were larger than the average full grown man. This made the collection of solar power a bit of a challenge. Therefore making Use Of Solar Power was not suitable of everyone. It was expensive and a bit of a chore as well.

These huge solar panels still exist in solar power plants, which produce energy for certain parts of the world. But over the years technological advancements have made solar power affordable and portable enough so common people can use it for their everyday lives. Nowadays solar panels have become so small that pocket calculators use these as an Alternative Power source to the usual single cell batteries.

But the use of Portable Solar Power did not stop with the use of pocket calculators. Numerous inventions have made use of portable solar power and some of these are available all over the world. Let’s take of look at 5 affordable uses of portable solar power.

Help with science project! Solar Power Car?

I’m in the 6th grade and I want to be like a little car and a like a little solar panel attached to it. But I have no idea how to make it, I was thinking about going to radio shack to buy the supplies and everything, but can someone tell me how to make one?

You need to buy a low power electric motor, often sold as “solar motor”.

Lot’s of companies sell them together with solar cell scrap. See e.g.

http://www.solar-world.com/SolarMini-Panels&Motors.htm

(no endorsement, I just googled “solar motor” and they popped up).

I would suggest you get encapsulated cells first, the scrap cells are very brittle and hard to work with (even if you have special solder and the right tools). You will also need some gears to set down the high rpms of the motor to the low rpm of the car. The gears will give you the necessary torque to drive a reasonable sized car.

Besides these simple hints, everything else is left to your imagination.

Cheap, Paper-Thin Solar Panels!

Hard on the heels of the news that renewable energy now leads fossil fuel production in terms of investment, companies like Xunlight are demonstrating thin-film silicon solar manufacturing capability in the hopes of capturing market share from rigid silicon Solar Panel manufacturers. For Xunlight, the manufacturing process involves imprinting amorphous silicon solar cells on sheets of Stainless Steel so thin you can roll them up like a blueprint. And, in a sense, they are – a blueprint for building integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) that promises more solar surfaces faster and cheaper.

Xunlight’s manufacturing process creates solar “sheets” 36 inches wide and up to a mile long, using a nine-layer, chemical vapor deposition process for the semiconductor materials, plus a bottom reflective layer and a surface electrode layer via the sputtering process. The resulting sheet, one hundred times thinner than a typical piece of paper, uses only a limited amount of silicon to create triple-junction solar cells.

These amorphous (without crystalline configuration) solar cells are much cheaper to manufacture, thus offering truly affordable Solar Energy in a lightweight format that can be used on many surfaces, from backpacks to buildings, to generate electricity.

Their drawback is an 8-percent efficiency rating, which is significantly lower than traditional, crystalline silicon panels at about 20 percent. Xunlight reportedly achieved the efficiency by incorporating three different materials (amorphous silicon, amorphous silicon germanium, and nanocrystalline silicon) that capture light in different wavelengths, overcoming bandgap deficiencies in other thin films and crystalline solar cells using only one primary material.

In fact, efficiency ratings are the single drawback of thin-film solar – a drawback that tends to overshadow their usefulness in so many applications given their flexibility. This is due to the inherent nature of amorphous silicon, which is less structurally reliable, resulting in degradation in the presence of sunlight or at high temperatures. Some concentrating solar technologies which promise to overcome this inefficiency are still on the drawing board.

Xunlight now joins the thin-film race with several other companies (Heliovolt, Nanosolar and United Solar Ovonic) to achieve thin film with efficiencies that match crystalline solar. Xunlight has an advantage in its high volume, roll-to-roll technique, but the two former companies are using copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), which is competitive with crystalline solar in terms of efficiency. Unfortunately, no one has yet been able to make a cheap product in volume because CIGS is so difficult to work with.

Thin film as it currently stands also carries the inherent risk of easier permeability and combustibility, but Solar Installers envision a day when they can carry rolls of thin film up to a roof, install it, and have a watertight roof that is also aesthetically pleasing to homeowners. And thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, millions in funding await entrepreneurs who think they can achieve that goal.
