Which is a better investment: Geothermal heating, or a 5kW Vertical Axis Wind Turbine?

I’m on the verge of buying a house (in the midwest) within a month and would like to cut back on utilities, so I’m trying to determine which would provide the most savings. I know a typical horizontal axis windmill would be more efficient, but unfortunately it’s out of the question (due to safety & space issues) in a residential area. Due to financial limits, I can’t get both (at least not yet). I will be using a gas stove since electric ones are such power hogs (in case that makes a difference).

Geothermal is always going to be better in the long run. Once you get pipe down a certain depth (usually 4-6 ft) the earth’s temperature is pretty consistent at 55 deg F. Wind energy is great! and generally a better bang for your buck IF you always have wind. The problem is that unless you live in Wyoming it’s not going to be consistent enough and the cost to build it is too much.

There are gov’t subsidies for both also. But a closed-loop geothermal system will be the cheapest.

But if you want to get really fancy you could do an open system: use water to heat the house and use the hot water in the shower, etc. This is much more expensive up front though. It would change your heating system completely and your water system.

Actually I was thinking about covering someone’s entire yard with solar panels (probably involves removing any trees or tall landscaping). I had been looking for a volunteer that wants to give up all of their room for my solar panels. I am glad I have heard from a volunteer. Now if we can find a few hundred million more we can have that global warming beat in this country.

I’m part of my school’s Key Club. in Northeast Oklahoma. I’m looking for an application to receive a federal grant to help pay, mostly, for a wind turbine we want to purchase for the school. You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Once you find a grant where you can qualify, apply for it at Grants.gov

Even if you buy books on “how to get grants” or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. 12 volt Solar Battery charger

DC electric wiring battery solar voltage help?

If I have (6) 12 volt batteries wired in series for a total of 72volts. I am thinking about buying a solar charger that is 18 – 24 volts. Do I have to have 3 of these Solar Panels wired in series to charge the batteries? What will happen if I purchase one charger and put the put the pos+ on the first battery and the neg – on the 6th battery? Will it charge, just slower? Do I have to match the charger output to the battery voltage. I do want to have to unhook the batteries that are in series because I am lazy. Thank you in advance for your help. I hope I explained it well enough.
Sorry for the typo, I don’t want to have to disconnect the 6 batteries that are wired in series.
The batteries are in a golf cart. Can I just trickle charge them with 18-24 volts. Doesn’t a regular charger trickle charge batteries at a lower voltage?

When a panel says 18 volts out, that’s the most you’ll get out of it. So if you connect it to 72 volts, either no current will flow, or worse, current will flow the wrong way.

I suspect the panel you have in mind is very low power. Six golfcart batteries is equivalent to what someone might have in a cabin, and charge with a 600W (minimum) array. A smaller array would not generate enough current to get the batteries to absorb charge.

If all you want to do is maintain the batteries with a trickle charge, best to just run an extension cord to a trickle charger.
